Boeing B-47 Stratojet
Long before the U-2 Dragonlady, it is rumored that the USAF and USN were conducting coastal overflights of the USSR with small tactical aircraft.  Dogfights were even rumored to have occurred with losses on both sides.
Eventually, retrofitted Strategic Air Command B-47’s, newly labeled RB-47’s, began performing deep penetration overflights of the USSR, their mission was aerial reconnaissance.  Several flights were bounced by soviet MIG’s and came back with battle damage, some RB-47’s even fired back with their co-pilot controlled tail guns.  Eventually Stratojets were falling to the MIG’s guns, with their aircrew either being lost or captured.
